The first arts and crafts day was rainy and drab but once inside the community building things came alive as 37 students enjoyed a snack provided by Homestead Bible Church and made three projects that included a squirrel covered in fall leaves, a painted pumpkin treat sack and a colorful leaf made out of tissue paper. Volunteers Hadley Gambill, Koby Smith, Lane Gambill, Clarissa Kraus, Mason Gambill, Kayla Fast and Denise Aldrich were great in keep things cleaned up and working with the younger kids. Our adult volunteers this month were Sandy Boeckman, Robin Swain and Linda Lipps. We also had a few parents that stayed and helped out.
At the end of WheaEsta 2009 the WheaEsta committee gathered together to see what improvements we could make for next year. One area the committee was interested in expanding was the children’s arts and crafts entries. After seeing the success of the cooking and sewing class earlier this summer it was decided that a monthly after school arts and crafts class would be just the thing to increase WheaEsta youth entries.
The Whea Esta committee will be offering the arts and craft class the first Wednesday of every month up till WheaEsta 2010, excluding the month of June, to Pre-K through 3rd grade students who attend the Okeene school system. Each month students will have the opportunity to make up to 3 arts or crafts projects. One item will go home with the student and the other item(s) will be stored until WheaEsta when the items will become Whea Esta entries.
Permission slips will be sent out to each student Pre-K through 3rd grade the week before the arts and crafts day. Slips must be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to school no later than the Friday before the class. No late permission slips will be accepted. The classes will be sponsored each month by local businesses and individuals; this month’s class was sponsored by Krause & Associates. A volunteer will accompany the students from the arts and crafts class to the school cafeteria where a light snack will be provided before the fun begins. If your child is to be picked up the authorized adult MUST come in and sign out your child – NO exceptions.
If you are interested in being a volunteer please call the Okeene Chamber of Commerce at 822-3005
